The Portaris Fractional Partnership™

Executive-level HR support, without the full-time hire.

Sometimes an organization needs experienced HR leadership, strategic perspective, and additional capacity, but that does not necessarily mean adding another full-time executive.

The Portaris Fractional Partnership™ provides executive-level HR leadership through a longer-term relationship with your organization. We become part of the organizational conversation, learning your business, your people, and your priorities so we can provide thoughtful perspective and help carry the work forward.

That need can look different from one organization to another. Your HR leader may need additional capacity. A senior HR role may be vacant. Growth or organizational change may be creating new demands. Or annual priorities such as workforce planning, compensation, performance, open enrollment, and compliance may simply be converging faster than your existing team can reasonably carry them.

A Fractional Partnership may last a few months, six months, a year, or longer. During that time, Portaris may work alongside your existing HR team, support an HR leader, partner directly with organizational leadership, or step into a temporary leadership or capability gap.

And because organizations change, the work can change too.

The challenge that brings us into your organization may not be the only place we ultimately help.

What Does Fractional HR Support Actually Look Like?

Fractional HR Support means becoming connected enough to your organization to understand more than the challenge immediately in front of us.

We learn how your organization works, what your leaders are trying to accomplish, and where your teams may need additional support. As that context develops, we can begin connecting things that may initially appear unrelated.

A performance concern may point to unclear expectations. A recruiting challenge may actually be a workforce planning issue. A process consuming too much time may be an ownership issue rather than a staffing issue.

And sometimes the need is simply capacity.

Your HR leader may be balancing open enrollment, year-end performance reviews, compensation planning, workforce budgeting, compliance changes, and next year's hiring priorities while still managing the everyday needs of the organization.

Or perhaps a senior HR role is vacant, the organization is growing or changing, or several important priorities are converging at once.

Fractional HR Support provides experienced leadership and additional capacity without requiring every need to become another permanent position.

That deeper understanding helps us look beyond the immediate challenge, help carry the priorities in front of you, and provide perspective on what may actually be creating the weight.

How We May Support You

The work within a Fractional Partnership is shaped around the organization, not a predetermined menu of services.

Here are some examples of what Portaris may help carry as part of the Partnership.

Portaris can bring an experienced, executive level HR perspective into leadership conversations, helping connect people priorities with where the organization is going.

That may include establishing HR priorities, thinking through workforce and capacity needs, advising leaders on people decisions, identifying emerging organizational needs, strengthening HR practices, or helping translate strategy into practical action.

For organizations with an existing HR leader, Portaris can also become another experienced person at the table to think with, challenge assumptions, and help carry significant priorities forward.

When an employee situation becomes complicated, Portaris can help leaders understand what is happening, consider available options, prepare for difficult conversations, strengthen documentation, identify patterns, and determine a thoughtful path forward.

Where appropriate, Portaris may also conduct or support workplace investigations and remain involved as situations develop rather than simply providing a recommendation and stepping away.

As part of a Fractional Partnership, support may extend beyond an individual situation. Portaris can help strengthen investigation practices, documentation, case-management processes, and leader capability, including developing and delivering training on effective workplace investigations. The goal is not only to address the situation in front of you, but to help strengthen how employee relations matters are handled over time.

Employee Relations Investigation Credential

Portaris has completed specialized Workplace Investigative Interviewing Strategies for HR/ER Professionals training through Wicklander Zulawski & Associates.

Managing and leading people can become one of the heaviest parts of leadership.

Portaris can work directly with leaders, managers, and executives as they navigate performance concerns, difficult conversations, employee expectations, team dynamics, accountability, communication, and other people responsibilities.

Support may also include helping a new leader successfully step into an organization or team. Through approaches such as Leader Immersion, we can help create an intentional transition by gathering perspective from the team, opening communication between the leader and employees, and establishing shared priorities for moving forward.

Because a Fractional Partnership develops over time, that support does not have to begin from zero every time a leader calls. We increasingly understand the organization, its expectations, its people, and the context surrounding the situation.

As organizations grow and change, roles, responsibilities, reporting relationships, and workloads do not always evolve at the same pace.

Portaris can work with leaders to understand how work is currently organized, identify gaps or unnecessary complexity, clarify roles and ownership, think through organizational structure, and consider the people and capabilities the organization may need next.

That may include succession considerations, future talent and hiring needs, workforce budgeting and planning, workload distribution, organizational design, or determining whether additional headcount is actually the answer.

Sometimes the question is not simply “Who do we need to hire?” but “What does the organization actually need?”

Performance management should be more than a form completed once a year.

Portaris can help strengthen how expectations, feedback, accountability, performance conversations, documentation, and reviews work throughout the organization. That may include supporting annual performance cycles, manager preparation, calibration discussions, and the processes that help create greater consistency across teams.

When individual performance concerns arise, we can also help leaders understand the situation, prepare for conversations, strengthen documentation, and determine a practical path forward.

The goal is not simply to create another process. It is to help build an approach leaders can actually use and employees can understand.

Recruiting is only one part of having the right people in the right places.

Portaris can help organizations look more broadly at critical roles, internal talent, retention risks, succession depth, development needs, and the capabilities the organization may need as the business changes.

That may include facilitating talent and succession reviews, identifying potential successors and readiness gaps, discussing development priorities, and using practical tools such as talent matrices or a 9-box approach when they make sense for the organization.

The goal is not simply to identify who may be ready for the next role. It is to create a clearer picture of the talent you have today, where vulnerabilities may exist, and where intentional development or external hiring may be needed for what comes next.

Portaris can help organizations identify learning needs and develop practical training that supports employees, managers, and leaders.

That may include designing subject-specific training programs, building broader learning and development initiatives, or strengthening existing training based on what the organization and its people need. Areas may include manager and executive HR training, employee relations, workplace investigations, harassment prevention, reasonable suspicion, leadership development, and other workplace topics.

Where appropriate, Portaris can also develop the supporting materials, facilitator resources, job aids, guides, and tools that help carry learning beyond the training itself.

Growth, restructuring, leadership changes, mergers and acquisitions, new locations, workforce changes, and major organizational initiatives all have a people side.

Portaris can help leaders anticipate that impact, think through communication and responsibilities, identify potential challenges, coordinate with the people involved, and help carry implementation forward.

For mergers, acquisitions, and other significant transitions, support may also include helping organizations think intentionally about people integration. That can include communication, leadership alignment, employee transition, roles and responsibilities, and structured approaches such as People Immersion to help bring organizations and teams together with greater clarity and connection.

The goal is not simply to manage the change itself, but to help the people experiencing it understand what is happening, what it means for them, and how the organization moves forward together.

As organizations grow and change, HR practices that once worked informally may need to become more intentional, consistent, and better aligned with the needs of the business.

Portaris can help leaders look across HR practices, policies, processes, documentation, and workplace requirements to identify gaps, emerging risks, and areas that may need greater structure or attention.

That may include reviewing policies and practices as employment requirements change, strengthening manager resources and documentation, preparing for workforce changes, or helping translate compliance requirements into practical approaches leaders and employees can actually use.

The goal is not compliance for the sake of compliance. It is helping build thoughtful HR practices that support the organization, its people, and where the business is going.

Not every challenge that appears to be a people issue begins with the people.

As organizations grow and change, responsibilities can become unclear, decision-making can slow, priorities can compete, and teams may begin working across structures or expectations that no longer fit the business.

Portaris can work with leaders to look across the organization, connect what may initially appear to be separate challenges, and consider whether structure, leadership alignment, accountability, role clarity, capacity, or competing priorities may be contributing to what is happening.

From there, we can help leaders clarify what needs to change, align the right people around it, and carry those priorities forward.

Sometimes solving the people challenge means looking beyond the people challenge.
